In June of 2021, I mailed Danielle Steel an eight-page letter written on a typewriter. It was a proposal. After Alma’s death, Danielle purchased Alma’s beautiful 15,000 sq/ft house in Pacific Heights, San Francisco. Alma had invented the phrase “Sugar Daddy” to describe her husband Adolph because he was twenty-four years older than she, and his money came from sugar. I requested that Danielle allow me to stage a photograph in her home. The photograph would be of me as Adolph, the world’s first Sugar Daddy, with a twenty-year-old boy as my Alma. I dreamed that I might convince Danielle to pose in the back of the photograph lording over us in a Kaftan holding a Martini. In September 2021, I received a package in the mail. In the box there was a letter from Danielle Steel’s assistant explaining that Danielle had enjoyed my letter but kindly declined my proposal. There were also three of her books inscribed to me, Past Perfect, Complications, and Expect a Miracle. I keep wondering if she was sending me a message.
